Rare Burl Ladle w/ Butter Stamp

A desirable and rare item in maple burl. The mid 19th century ladle(or scoop) is beautifully carved and figured and retains it's original mellow natural finish. The ladle is in excellent condition.

Dovetailed and Carved Cherry Box

The box is cherry with a dark crazed varnish over an original red wash. I believe the carving on the lid represents a bundle of tobacco similar to what cigar store Indians have in their outreached hand. The box was found in an estate in the Hudson Valley near Albany. Circa 1830-40

Price: $475

Early English Needlework

This English needlework dates to the mid 17th century. The allegorical subject is most likely biblical. Needlework such as this was often mounted on mirrors or small cabinets in addition to being framed. It is mounted in an 18th century frame of the Hogarth style. Colors are good with some expected fading. There is an old repair in a small area between the two adult figures in the lower right. The overall presentation is very appealing with castles, tents, animals, insects and people. It has it all.

Dimensions: 15 5/8”W x 12 ¼”H

Price: $3950

The decoration is beautifully executed with colors and style consistent with the decorators of the Butler family. The shop was in operation from 1824 to the mid 1850’s. It is in excellent condition. The attribution to the Butler tinshop is made by referencing “American Painted Tinware – A Guide to its Identification” by Martin and Tucker, volume one, chapter four.

Decorated Tin Document Box

This box is somewhat unique in its design. It is attributed to Pennsylvania by way of a similar example in “American Painted Tinware – A Guide to its Identification” by Martin and Tucker, volume four, figure 4.55. The condition is good with thinness to the asphaltum on the top and some loss in the decoration within the white bad surrounding the center panel. The box is very striking.

Dimensions: 6 ½”H x 9”L x 5 1/8”D

Decorated Tin Document Box

This box is attributed to the Berlin and East Berlin group of shops in Connecticut. The swag design, technique and use of color is similar to examples from that area as shown in “American Painted Tinware – A Guide to its Identification” by Martin and Tucker, volume one, pages 31-35. The condition is very good with expected wear to areas on the front lid. The wear is actually less obvious than what the photo tends to show.

Running Horse Weathervane

A very stylish mid 19thc running horse sheet iron weathervane. It is painted black over white. The bowed head and position of the front leg make this a very appealing form. It has an early 20thc mounting pipe that evidently was used as replacement for the original shaft that protruded thru the shoulder of the horse. A small portion of the rear leg where it may have attached to the horizontal pipe is missing. It’s form and scale are very striking.
